Scottsdale, Gilbert and Chander are the top three places to rent in America, according to new data from WalletHub.
The finance site ranked 182 cities based on rental market, affordability and overall quality of life. Scottsdale came in first: The city offers the highest quality of life in the country, and while it isn’t the cheapest place to rent, it’s far from the priciest, ranking 57th for rental affordability.
Gilbert ranked second, thanks to stats like the 10th-highest average square footage, the third-lowest crime rate and the 37th-highest affordability. The average resident spends just 21% of their income on rent, with only 19% spending more than half of their income. Furthermore, Gilbert’s highly-ranked school system makes it a desirable locale for families.
Chandler, meanwhile, ranked third: Similarly to Gilbert, the average resident spends 21% of their income on rent while only 20% spend more than half of their income. Security deposits in the city are also capped at two months’ rent, and 17% of rental homes were built between 2010 and 2024.
Peoria also ranked high on WalletHub’s list at No. 6, while cities like Mesa, Glendale, Phoenix and Tempe ranked in the top 25.
Several factors influence the Phoenix area’s hospitable rental environment, starting with the year-round warm weather. Less glamourous — but potentially more valuable — are the state’s bedbug laws, which protect renters from infestations in rental properties.
