Let’s be honest about what coaching really is

by Kelly Parker

Do you need a coach? No. You can absolutely build a real estate business without one. People do it every day.

But here is the question I have become far more interested in: Why do the people performing at the highest levels almost always have one?

Tom Brady, Simone Biles and Bill Gates all have coaches, despite redefining excellence in their fields. Not because they lack ability, but because they have learned something the rest of us tend to forget.

The closer you are to your work, the harder it is to see yourself clearly.

That is where coaching changes everything. Not because it hands you information you could not Google, but because it gives you perspective you cannot create from inside your own blind spots.

And in an industry obsessed with tactics, I think we have started to misunderstand what coaching actually is.

Most agents are surrounded by strategy. Endless brokerage training sessions, a camera roll full of screenshots, saved posts promising the three moves that will double your business this year. Underneath all of it runs a quiet belief: If I could just find the right strategy, everything would finally click.

I do not believe that is true. In fact, I think it is exactly why so many agents stay stuck.

Teaching isn’t coaching

Plenty of people call themselves coaches, and many of them are wildly successful. They have built remarkable businesses and have real experience to share. But what they are often selling is not coaching. It is their blueprint.

“Here is exactly what I did. Now go do the same.”

That is teaching. That is consulting. That is mentoring. There is genuine value in all of it. But let’s not confuse it with coaching.

Teaching starts from the assumption that their way is the way. Real coaching starts from a different question: What is the right way for you?

The wrong coach tries to make you more like them. The right coach helps you become more fully yourself.

Because what worked for them was never just the strategy. It was the person executing it. Their strengths, their values, their leadership style, their personality, their market, their timing — all of it was invisibly baked into the strategy they now teach.

That is why one agent thrives doing exactly what another cannot seem to sustain. It is not a discipline problem or a motivation problem. It is something you cannot see.

Your business is a mirror

After building a top-1% real estate business, developing the women on my own team to do the same, and coaching everyone from emerging agents to seven-figure business owners, I know this to be true: Your business is always telling you something about yourself.

Every boundary you do not hold. Every client you resent. Every opportunity you do not pursue. Every season of burnout. Every plateau you cannot explain.

None of it is random. Your business is simply reflecting the internal operating system that is leading it.

The people-pleaser builds a business full of impossible clients. The perfectionist struggles to delegate, or to execute at all. The agent who believes their worth comes from achievement never feels like they have done enough, no matter how much they create.

Two people can be handed the identical strategy and produce completely different results, not because one works harder, but because each is running it through a different internal operating system.

This is where great coaching earns its place. Information tells you what to do. Coaching helps you understand why you are doing what you are doing, and how to do it in a way that is actually aligned with the outcomes you want. It surfaces the beliefs shaping your decisions, the patterns keeping you stuck and the fears quietly sabotaging your growth.

The greatest breakthroughs rarely come from another tactic. They come from seeing yourself clearly enough to lead differently.

So, do you need a coach? No. But if you choose to have one, choose carefully. Find someone less interested in teaching you how they built their business and more interested in helping you build one that is authentically yours. Someone who does not hand you another blueprint, but helps you uncover the operating system quietly shaping every decision, every action and every result.

Because when the person leading the business changes, the business finally has permission to change too.

And in my experience, that is where real transformation begins.
