Scottsdale, Chandler and Gilbert among top rental markets in the US

by Emily Marek

Three Phoenix-area cities — Scottsdale, Chandler and Gilbert — rank among the best places to rent in the United States, according to WalletHub’s annual ranking.

The finance site ranked Scottsdale No. 2 in the country, citing both high quality of life and job availability. The city’s score was also boosted by its weather and outdoor recreation options.

Those positives outweigh Scottsdale’s affordability, which ranked No. 53. However, over 120 cities on WalletHub’s list were less affordable, and the typical Scottsdale renter spends just about 21% of their income on housing.

Plus, Scottsdale renters enjoy one of the largest average square footages in the country at 2,331 square feet.

Chandler ranked No. 3 in the country. Renters in the southeast Phoenix-area city also spent about 21% of their income on rent. The city has an average square footage of 1,909 for rental properties, and more than 16% of units were built between 2010 and 2023.

No. 4 Gilbert, meanwhile, is considerably more affordable than its Arizona counterparts, coming in at No. 9 for affordability. It also provides renters with a similarly high quality of life to Scottsdale and Chandler and ranks as the third-safest city on the list.

Furthermore, all three cities benefit from statewide bedbug laws that protect renters.
