Arizona among top states for millennial migration

Roughly 2.8 million millennials moved across state lines in 2022 — and a huge chunk of them moved into Arizona, according to a report from StorageCafe.

The Grand Canyon State gained over 77,000 new residents in 2022, the fourth-highest proportion of new residents in the country behind Florida, Texas and North Carolina. Arizona also emerged as the No. 7 state for incoming millennials — that is, adults aged 24 to 39.

Approximately 14,000 millennials made Arizona their home in 2022. Most of these new Arizonians hailed from California, Colorado and Texas.

So, why are young people flocking to Arizona? In the case of the California-to-Arizona migration, home prices have a lot to do with it. The average home in California costs $713,000, compared to $399,000 in Arizona — that’s a savings of about $314,000. Likewise, Coloradoans who move to Arizona save about $131,000 on homebuying.

Texans, however, may have to spend a bit more on housing in Arizona, with the average home costing about $127,000 extra in Arizona than in their home state. Despite that, 33% of Arizona-bound Texas millennials were able to become homeowners within their first year of Arizona residence.
