Gilbert, Scottsdale among safest cities in America

by Emily Marek

Several Phoenix-area cities rank as some of the safest in the country, according to a new report from financial analysis website Wallethub.

Wallethub compared over 180 cities based on 41 indicators of safety across three main categories: home and community safety (including metrics like the prevalence of terrorist attacks, mass shootings, murders, assaults, thefts and hate crimes per capita, as well as the share of law enforcement officers, EMTs and paramedics and firefighters), natural disaster risk (including risk levels for earthquakes, floods, hail, hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires) and financial safety (including unemployment rates, uninsured rates, foreclosure rates, debt-to-income ratios, poverty rates, job security and bankruptcy filings). Home and community safety was weighted most heavily.

Nashua, N.H., ranked as the safest city in the country, with the eighth-best home and community safety and financial safety scores. Nashua was followed by Columbia, Maryland, and South Burlington, Vermont, which ranked No. 1 for home and community safety and No. 1 for financial safety, respectively.

Gilbert ranked as the fourth-safest city in America, ranking No. 10 for home and community safety and No. 14 for natural disaster risk. Though financial safety ranked considerably lower at No. 56, Gilbert’s strength in other metrics helped it secure its rank as one of the top five safest cities in America.

Not far below Gilbert was Scottsdale, which ranked No. 10. The city ranked No. 17 for home and community safety, No. 28 for financial safety, and No. 53 for natural disaster risk.

Chandler came in at No. 14 overall, thanks to its ranks as the eighth-safest city in terms of natural disasters.

Further down the list were Peoria, Mesa and Tempe at Nos. 28, 32 and 38.
