Surprise is the third-most affordable city in the United States to purchase a home, according to an annual report from WalletHub.
Looking at 300 U.S. cities, the finance site analyzed housing prices, insurance costs, tax rates, vacancies and more and found that Surprise ranks third in the country, behind only Flint, Michigan, and Detroit. Among midsize cities, Surprise ranks No 1.
In addition to a relatively low cost of living, Surprise has the 18th-highest rate of median-home price appreciation in the country.
Surprise also boasts the eighth-lowest median real estate tax rate and the 11th-most quarterly active listings per 1,000 residents.
“When deciding where to buy, home prices alone aren’t a good enough indicator of how affordable things will be,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “You also have to consider how prices compare to incomes in the area, plus factor in things like the cost of living, maintenance expenses and taxes. The most affordable cities, like Flint, Mich., and Surprise have low costs across several of these different metrics.”
Also on WalletHub’s list were Mesa (No. 15), Peoria (No. 22) and Gilbert (No. 23).
