Houzz predicts that these interior design trends will take over in 2024

by Emily Marek

How will our homes evolve in the new year? Home renovation and design website Houzz has 10 predictions for interior design trends that will take off in 2024.

Blended backsplashes

One kitchen trend on the rise is the blended backsplash. Designers are installing slabs of stone or quartz that match the countertops behind hard-to-clean areas in the kitchen, like the sink or cooktop. This creates a more visually interesting look that’s also easier to wipe down than tiles and grout.

Fluted details

Fluting has risen in popularity on furniture this year, but in 2024 we’re likely to see the accent spread into other areas of the home. Don’t be surprised to see the vertical texture everywhere from kitchen cabinets to bathroom vanities next year.

Warm neutrals

As much as bold jade tones and eclectic colors had their moment in 2023, Houzz predicts that warm neutrals will have a resurgence next year as buyers and renovators look for ways to make their space more homey, comfortable and seasonal.

Shades of blue

It won’t be all neutrals next year, though. A myriad of blue shades are set to spike in popularity in 2024, particularly those that mimic the sky or water. In fact, several paint brands have named a shade of blue their “color of the year,” for 2024, including a Robins’ egg blue from Valspar and a bright twist on pastel blue from Krylon.

Handmade/custom accents

Next year, homeowners will want what no one else has. Many homeowners are already incorporating handmade features in their renovations — whether these accents are commissioned from local artists or DIY-ed, Houzz predicts an increase in the value of one-of-a-kind home features that represent the owner’s unique sense of style.

Appliance garages

No one wants to see an air fryer sitting on the kitchen counter — which is why one of the top design trends of 2024 will be appliance garages.

No, not an actual garage — these “appliance cabinets” just serve as a space to store away all kitchen countertop appliances like toasters, microwaves, coffee pots, etc., saving precious counter space (and making the room feel more luxurious).

Timeless style

Many renovators are opting for accents and features that will stand the test of time and introduce a quiet luxury to their space. Think elements like brick, clay tiles, rustic wood and arches.

Herringbone

From floors to backsplashes to furniture, herringbone will be everywhere in 2024. The zig-zagging pattern creates texture and movement, increasing the visual interest of any room.

Mud/Laundry rooms

Houzz thinks that mud/laundry rooms will also see a surge in popularity next year. The setup seems like a no-brainer: Dirty clothes, muddy shoes and sandy beach towels can go straight in the washing machine without having to track the mess into the rest of the home. It’s a great way to conserve space without compromising on functionality.

Planted walkways

As people focus more and more on curating their outdoor spaces, planted walkways are gaining traction. This design trend leaves extra space in between stones or pavers intended for a walkway, leaving room for ground cover greenery. While some just leave space for grass in between steps, others get more creative by including flora like hens and chicks, creeping phlox or juniper.
