Scottsdale named fourth-best place to retire in the US

Scottsdale is the No. 4 city for retirees in the United States.

Scottsdale is the No. 4 city for retirees in the United States, behind three Florida cities — Orlando, Miami and Tampa.

In a recent analysis, personal finance company WalletHub compared 182 U.S. metros on a range of 45 key metrics under four broad categories: affordability, activities, quality of life and healthcare.

Scottsdale scored high based on its retiree-friendly environment, coming in first for quality of life and second for its percentage of population aged 65 and older.

Scottdale — and all Arizona cities for that matter — also received points for mild, favorable weather, with the city ranking fourth in the country for weather. The city also ranked 18th for retiree-friendly activities.

“It’s important to choose wisely when picking where to retire, as many retirees are on a fixed income,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “The best cities for retired people are those that minimize taxes and expenses, as well as have good opportunities for retirees to continue paid work for extra income, if they choose to do so. In addition, top cities provide high-quality health care and offer plenty of enjoyable activities for retirees.”

Casper, Wyoming rounded out the top five places to retire, while the bottom five cities for retirement were Rancho Cucamonga, California; Fresno, California; Newark, New Jersey; San Bernardino, California; and Stockton, California, respectively.
