Arizona — and specifically, Phoenix — were among the top destinations for movers last year, according to the 2023 U.S. Moving Migration Report from Allied Van Lines.
Arizona ranked as the No. 2 state in the country for inbound movers, beat out only by South Carolina. Meanwhile, Tucson ranked as the No. 2 city in the country for inbound movers while Phoenix ranked No. 5.
Allied says this trend has a lot to do with Arizona’s booming job market in the tech and manufacturing industries, but it’s also thanks in part to a relatively low cost of living compared to other cities with year-round warm climates like California or Florida.
Inbound movers accounted for 60.8% of all Arizona migration last year, while outbound movers accounted for 39.2%. New Phoenix residents were most likely to have moved from Chicago, followed by Seattle, Minneapolis, Denver and Portland. Conversely, those leaving the Phoenix area were most likely to move to many of the same cities — Portland, Denver and Chicago, as well as Dallas and Washington, D.C.
