Nowadays, Phoenix isn’t really considered an affordable place to rent — however, there are some pockets of the Valley where renters can find affordable housing.
According to a report from CashNetUSA, renters in Paradise Valley (specifically, the 95253 ZIP code) only need to spend 15.27% of their annual income on rent, based on the average rent as a percentage of the area’s median household income. That makes it the most affordable rental neighborhood in the state. For reference, any proportion over 30% is considered “cost-burdened,” according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Zooming in on Phoenix proper, Desert View (85085) is the most affordable ZIP code in the city, with renters only needing to spend 21.06% of their income on rent. That ZIP is followed by Maricopa County (85083) at 22.32%, Ahwatukee Foothills/South Phoenix (85044) at 23.89%, Desert View (85024) at 24.67% and Ahwatukee Foothills/South Phoenix (85048) at 25.11%.
