New study ranks Realtor as the most desirable job in the U.S.

by Patrick Regan

Realtor is the most desirable job in the country, according to an analysis of Google searches.

Over 12 months, job search tools site BeamJobs examined the average number of Google searches each month for different jobs, combined with eight search phrases, including “how to be a” or “how to become a” or “how long does it take to become a.”

The results put Realtor in the No. 1 spot, with an average of nearly 53,000 monthly searches. Travel agent was a distant second, with an average of 35,700 searches.

Realtor was the most desirable job in 49 of the 50 states, the exception being Alabama, where travel agent was the most desirable job. The state whose population showed the most interest in being a Realtor — with an average of 19.94 monthly searches per 100,000 people — was Georgia.

Chicago Agent’s annual Truth About Agents survey indicates real estate agents for the most part really do like their jobs. In the most recent survey, 80% of respondents said they have worked in real estate for six years or more, and when asked if they had plans to change brokerages in the next 12 months, only 6% answered “yes.”

BeamJobs’ ranking of the 10 most desirable jobs, with average monthly Google searches:

1. Realtor, 52,984

2. Travel agent, 35,691

3. Firefighter, 29,434

4. Nurse, 28,450

5. Ultrasound technician, 28,252

6. Electrician, 27,684

7. Therapist, 26,562

8. Pharmacist, 25,622

9. Paralegal, 24,335

10. Dental hygienist, 22,309

“It’s interesting to see such a wide range of jobs appear in the ranking, demonstrating how much skills and aspirations can vary across the country,” said Stephen Greet, BeamJobs CEO and co-founder.

“Moreover, the ranking suggests that a high salary isn’t always essential when searching for a job; firefighters rank third, and since volunteers account for more than half of firefighters in the U.S., it reflects that money isn’t a motivator for all.”

The study revealed that Wyoming had the highest rate of job searches, at 513.22 searches per 100,000 citizens, while Wisconsin recorded the lowest rate, with 229.60 searches per 100,000 residents.
