Multifamily permits decline around U.S. but increase in Phoenix

Builders in Phoenix were issued one of the highest number of multifamily permits in the country last year, according to a report from the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB).

Nationwide, year-to-date multifamily permits decreased by 17.4% year over year in December, declining in all four major regions of the United States.

However, multifamily permits increased by 1% annually in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Phoenix also saw the fourth-largest quantity of multifamily permits issued to builders, with 20,827 permits issued in 2023.

Additionally, Phoenix ranked among the metro areas with the highest quantity of single-family construction permits, despite an 8% decline year over year. Builders and developers were issued 24,810 single-family permits in 2023, the third-highest amount in the nation.

Statewide, Arizona was one of 15 states with year-over-year increases in multifamily permits, which rose 0.6%. Single family permits decreased by 7.7%.
