Arizona’s population grew by 1.3% between 2021 and 2022 — that’s the eighth-fastest rate of growth in the country, according to the National Association of Homebuilders. Arizona’s population previously fell in 2020.
That percentage increase equates to 94,320 people, which is additionally the fifth-largest nominal increase of any U.S. state.
Despite Arizona’s population plunge in 2020, every metropolitan area in the state saw positive median growth during the time period from 1980 to 2022. Most of that growth is concentrated, unsurprisingly, in the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metropolitan area, which saw its population surge to over 5 million in 2022. The area had a median growth rate of 2.85%, the highest in the state, followed by Tucson MSA at 1.7%.
